Advocator of non-osteotomy (non-bone-breaking) approach
Wu's non-osteotomy (non-bone-breaking) approach to surgical correction of bunion deformity was prompted by the inconclusiveness of osteotomy (bone-breaking) approach after probably more than 70 different techniques over the past more than hundred years. Today more than 95% of bunion surgeries around the world are done by more than a dozen different osteotomy procedures.
This lack of conclusiveness by osteotomy (bone-breaking) approach is the direct concequence of the very concept of breaking absolutely normal bones to compensate for the real underlying culprit of bunion deformity which is loosening of the soft supporting tissues for the bones. If bones are normal and not responsible for the bunion deformity but still sacrificed, then compromises of the surgical results would not be avoidable.
Thus Wu believes strongly that bunion deformity should only be corrected through soft tissue techniques and the innocent bones have to be kept intact for any hope of consistent restoration of normal foot function. |
